Things to do

Walking

Whether walking, hiking or rambling the Peak District is abound with routes to explore. There are paths for the wobbly first-timers as well as the veteran hillwalkers and fellwalkers. Wander down by the river or scramble up atop the peaks. You can walk through the fields or from town to town, don’t worry where you end up as the author of the 1939 Penguin Guide advised: ‘The Peaklander is somewhat taciturn, but never fails to respond to a friendly approach’.

Cycling

The rave today is exploring on two wheels. We’ve a bicycle shed to keep your trusty steed safe and repair it if it needs any quick fixes. Don’t worry if you don’t have a bike, there are plenty of places where you can hire one from. Then on your bike and go – there are traffic-free routes, steep roads, flat lanes and off-road tracks for all abilities. Just ask at the bar for our favourite routes and pitstop locations.

Caving

Beauty lies within, they say. Well in Derbyshire that’s certainly true as you can explore a vast network of caves and caverns. Just up the road is the 464ft Titan Cave, the deepest natural cavern in the UK. If you’d just like to have a look, they are several well-lit show caves so you can see the incredible underground formations. For the more adventurous, you can sign up with a local centre which can provide equipment and training so you can discover the beauty that lies within the Peak District.

Gliding

Climb up to Mam Tor, our ‘Mother Hill’. At 517 metres high it doesn’t just afford stunning views of the landscape, but acts as the perfect setting off spot for gliding, paragliding and hang-gliding. Get up with the birds in a tandem flight or learn to fly yourself with a training course at a British Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association School – it’s never too late.

Fishing

Cast out over lakes and rivers to enjoy some of England’s finest fishing. There are incredible locations abound, whether you’re into fly fishing, coarse fishing or even carp fishing. Just make sure you’re got your permit sorted first. You may have to be a member of Pride of Derby Fishing Club, Derby Railway Angling Club or Derbyshire County Angling Club, but there are areas for the general public as well if you purchase a day’s fishing ticket.
